In 1909 during construction of the Alberta Legislature Building, a time capsule was placed inside the cornerstone. It was removed and opened in 2012 in celebration of the centennial of the official opening of the building.
A number of educational activities have been developed in connection with this exciting event.
These activities have direct connections to the Alberta Social Studies Program of Studies and are applicable to all grade levels.
The Alberta Legislature Grounds offer a variety of activities and sights for visitors. A fun new way to learn and discover the 30 historical monuments is to take a scavenger hunt. Simply print these documents and go exploring.

The Mock Legislature is a simulation activity for grade 6 students and an opportunity to experience what it's like to be part of the parliamentary process. This challenging activity is structured so that every student can participate in the debate. Using replicas of the apparel and the symbolic items actually used in the Legislature, students are guided through the stages of the passage of a bill.
The Mock Legislature program is appropriate for grade 6 and 9.
Parliamentary Traditions and Trivia provides a fascinating description of some of the longstanding traditions and rituals of the parliamentary system and explains their historical roots. Also included is a collection of parliamentary trivia pertaining to Alberta's Legislative Assembly.

The monthly Educational Newsletter is a user friendly, thematic resource for teachers that concentrates on a specific topic each month and includes learning outcomes, suggested student activities and resource links and videos.

In this lesson students will learn about the Mace used by the Legislative Assembly of Alberta, including the history of the mace and what it is used for today. Students will also learn about other provincial symbols and be able to construct their very own mace! See accompanying videos to learn more.

From Idea to Law: The Legislative Process is appropriate for grade 6.
The ELL tour is supplemented by activity books developed for a variety of learning levels, utilizing the Canadian language benchmarks (CLB). The activity books, written for CLB levels 1 through 8, include pretour reading and speaking exercises that will introduce students to related vocabulary, Alberta's legislative history, the democratic process and present-day provincial representatives. All materials will provide context for what visitors will experience on the tour and further their learning outcomes.
