Explore First Steps, First Impressions and First Experiences as a Newcomer to Canada.

The immigration experience is marked by firsts. The first day in a new country takes shape with an individual's first steps, first impressions and first experiences. Come explore immigrants' diverse personal Day 1 experiences, from Confederation to present day.

Newcomers' unique and shared experiences—across time and cultures—are highlighted in a thoughtful way through oral histories, archival images, original artworks, objects and your participation. Explore Day 1 through the themes of Transitions, Arrival, Encounters, Finding Your Way and Reflections. You will be transported back to your first day in Canada, or inspired to imagine yourself in a newcomer's shoes.

Your Canada: Day 1 experience goes beyond the exhibition. Through community outreach programs and learning opportunities in local schools, Canada: Day 1 is sure to spark ongoing conversations and further reflections on collective Canadian identity.

Canada: Day 1 is a bilingual travelling exhibition produced by the Canadian Museum of Immigration at Pier 21 in Halifax, Nova Scotia as a legacy project of our nation's 150th anniversary in 2017 and supported by RBC Foundation. Canada: Day 1 is proudly hosted by the Legislative Assembly of Alberta.

Note: The screening will be followed by a Q and A session with Roda Siad, one of the film's two Calgary-based filmmakers.

This short documentary follows several refugee families during their first 19 days in Canada as they navigate an unfamiliar terrain that has suddenly become their home. 19 Days reveals the human side of the refugee resettlement process. A unique look at the global migration crisis and one particular stage of asylum, the film lays plain the realities faced on the difficult road towards integration.

 Featuring Nuela Charles

Nuela Charles is a Canadian singer-songwriter of Swiss and Kenyan descent. Her style runs the gamut – hip hop, pop, jazz, R & B and soul – and Nuela captures the spirit and confidence of them all. She is based in Edmonton, but much like her music, she has lived an extremely diverse lifestyle, calling three continents and four different countries home.

Nuela's debut album, Aware, was released in late 2012, and she's gone on to win numerous awards and has been nominated for countless more. Her songs have appeared in television shows on VH1, Family Channel, W Network, MTV and more. Join us for a community open house to celebrate Canada: Day 1, the latest exhibition in the Borealis Gallery. Enjoy live music, games, activities and light refreshments. Visit the exhibit, and share your immigration story.

At 1 p.m. the Legislative Assembly of Alberta and Ms. Marie Chapman, CEO of the Canadian Museum of Immigration at Pier 21, will bring welcoming remarks. A special performance by musician John Wort Hannam will follow.

There is no cost to attend the open house. All ages are welcome!
