ALBERTA AND THE GROUP OF SEVEN: Teachers, Students and colleagues

The Group of Seven is Canada’s best-known collective of landscape painters. In the early part of the 1900s, recognizing the beauty and the singularity of the Canadian landscape, this group of painters broke with established art conventions to find new ways of capturing the varied textures of Canada.

Though primarily based in Eastern Canada, the Group’s influence extended across the country. Alberta and the Group of Seven: Teachers, Students and Colleagues features engaging works by the Group of Seven as well as works from Alberta’s first generation of professional artists – home-grown talents who either worked with, studied under or painted together with Group members. This exhibition explores the connections, influences and sources of inspiration Alberta has provided.

Through oil paintings, watercolours and sketches, experience the history of Alberta through the eyes of the individuals who painted the Rockies, Foothills, Peace River Country and Central Alberta.
