This customized tour assists those who are new to the English language with learning the basic terms and concepts necessary to understanding Alberta's system of governance and Legislative Assembly, while encouraging involvement in our province's democratic system and active citizenship.
This tour is supplemented by activity books developed for a variety of learning levels, utilizing the Canadian language benchmarks (CLB). The activity books, written for CLB levels 1 through 8, include pretour reading and speaking exercises that will introduce students to related vocabulary, Alberta's legislative history, the democratic process and present-day provincial representatives. All materials will provide context for what visitors will experience on the tour and further their learning outcomes.
ELL teachers are also invited to book the mock Legislature classroom, where they can participate in a debate simulation in a specially designed replica Chamber. With the help of experienced Heritage Interpreters students can enact the basics of a parliamentary debate while practicing their language skills.
Teachers will receive program information when they book.
